Frank Molano, founder and oboist, wrote this introduction for the eclectic concert:

Today - the GCCW plays for you our Spring Concert - A Musical Potpourri - and in this concert, we pay tribute to Aeolus, the god of the winds - a reminder that our forebears relied on winds for their sailing vessels - winds provided the means to travel to distant lands and travel allowed commerce with cultures different from their home - and as the adage goes - once the mind sees and experiences something new, it can never go back to its previous dimensions - Aeolus gave us winds - the proverbial winds of change - oftentimes capricious, frightening, and unpredictable winds take us to uncertain places we never knew nor never imagined - these are the winds of transformations - and for today’s concert, most of the music we play today - on modern wind instruments - are transcriptions - and transformations of the originals - they have allowed the originals to take on new dimensions and aspects - perhaps not initially available to the imagination at the time they were created - but they are possible today - and very often to charming and enlightening effect - but never allowing our imagination to revert to previous boundaries - always leading us to open new avenues of thought - and guiding us towards new transformational directions and possibilities ...
— Frank Molano, Founder and Oboist

Included on the program were arrangements that the group members had written specifically for the GCCW.  Pianist Robert Demmert arranged "Puffin' Billy" (theme from Captain Kangaroo, E. White), "Concerto in A Major," (J.S. Bach), and "Concerto in B-flat" (G.F. Handel).  I (flutist Vivien Li) arranged "In a Persian Market" (A. Ketelby) and "Journey to the West" (J. Dawei).

Before coming to America, my parents and I lived with my grandparents. Every night after dinner, we’d watch Journey to the West [a very popular TV series], and I’d hear the theme song during the end credits. It’s one of the fondest memories of my childhood. My grandparents are no longer here, but every time I hear this song, it takes me back to that time and brings a smile to my face.

Conductor Ken Wilbanks arranged jazz standard "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Benny Goodman) and pop tune "Africa" (Toto.)

Earlier this spring, I was in the emergency room. Doctors had thought that I wasn’t going to make it through the night. I had brought my computer with me, and all I could remember was one of our horn players wanted a piece that featured jazz horn, and another horn player loved the song ‘Africa.’ So, while my life was on the line, I worked on these two arrangements. The nurse attending to me had had some musical training, and he often asked me how my arrangements were coming along!
— Ken Wilbanks

After the concert, a delicious wine and cheese reception was held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.  Musicians and audience had the opportunity to socialize, while sampling delectable desserts provided by the oboe section - Frank made a savory blueberry tart, while Christina brought amazing, music-themed cupcakes.

The GCCW would like to thank Rev. Robert and the entire staff at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for generously allowing the group to hold weekly rehearsals and performances in its beautiful sanctuary.
